The journey began with a familiar challenge for many young athletes: the transition from the carefree days of youth hockey to the more physical and competitive world of junior leagues. For Robitaille, a smaller player, this meant facing the scrutiny of coaches and the pressure to prove himself.
"Size was always a big factor for me," he reflects. "When hitting became part of the game, it was a challenge. Coaches started seeing me as just a smaller guy, and that affected my confidence."
Despite being cut from programs and facing criticism about his speed, Robitaille didn't let these setbacks define him. Instead, he focused on his strengths, understanding that smaller players need to bring something unique to the table. "You have to find your edge, whether it's speed or grit," he explains.
The pandemic added another layer of complexity to his journey. After a season in Coldwater, Robitaille found himself questioning his passion for the game. However, a return to Orillia and a successful U18 season reignited his love for hockey, leading him to believe in the possibility of a junior hockey career.
"That U18 year was a turning point," he says. "I realized that my passion for the game was still there, and I wanted to prove myself."
Robitaille credits his growth to the influence of coaches like Dalyn Telford, who taught him resilience and a deeper understanding of the game. This mental toughness has been a key factor in his success, especially when managing the demanding schedule of a championship-calibre season while studying mechanical engineering.
"Balancing school and hockey has been a challenge," he admits. "But I've learned to focus on one thing at a time and give my all to each commitment."
Looking back, Robitaille believes his greatest growth has been mental. He's learned to control his emotions on the ice, a skill that has improved his overall performance.
"I used to get frustrated easily, and that would affect my game. Now, I feel like I'm in a much better mental space for hockey."
Throughout his journey, Robitaille has had the unwavering support of his parents, who have been there through every twist and turn. This support has been instrumental in his ability to keep playing and believing in himself.
"My parents have been my rock. No matter what decision I made, they were there to support me. That's been huge for my confidence."
As the Fergus Whalers chase the Provincial Junior Hockey League's Clarence Schmalz Cup, Robitaille's story serves as an inspiration to younger athletes. It's a reminder that setbacks are not failures, and with resilience and a positive mindset, one can overcome any obstacle.
"You just gotta keep playing," he says. "Don't let doubts or setbacks define you. Keep pushing, and believe in yourself."
